We get multiple dreams every night many of which we don’t even remember. However, could one actually gain control over their dreams? This is possible through lucid dreaming, a concept that attracted a lot of attention in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Lucid dreaming is the state of which a person is aware they are dreaming. The word lucid is derived from the Latin adjective lucidus which means “light, bright or clear”. Thus, lucid dreams differ from ordinary dreams, as they are very clear, realistic and provide the dreamer with the ability to control the events consciously.

Lucid dreaming represents a state between rapid eye movement sleep and being awake. The very first record of lucid dreams was from Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, where he described an incidence of self-awareness during a dream state.

Creativity

Lucid dreaming is a very exciting and fascinating concept as it allows the dreamer to explore the world freely. In addition, it can be used to practice creativity and work on your goals. For example, lucid dreams can help artists find inspiration and computer programmers with decoding.

Treatment of Nightmares

Lucid dreams have been used as a treatment for people with reoccurring nightmares. Lucid dreaming allows the dreamer to think clearly and gain control over the nightmare. Thus, they could use supernatural means to fight back in the nightmare or deliberately wake up.

Treatment of Fears and Phobias

Lucid dreams can help overcome certain phobias. These include fear of flying and arachnophobia, which is fear of spiders. In these therapies, the dreamer is gradually exposed to their fear in an attempt to progressively overcome that fear.  The individual experience their phobia, while knowing that they are safe as they are not in the real world.

Concerns about Lucid Dreaming

The extent to which one can experience lucid dreaming varies in each person. There are several concerns around lucid dreaming, one of which is that the sleeper may not get enough rest.

Lucid dreaming is generally not recommended for people suffering of certain mental health disorders. For example, patients with schizophrenia may have difficulty in distinguishing between their dreams and real-life events.
