Crescent Pharma pledge funding for the IPF

Community pharmacists fearing they may be marginalised as they jostle for a prominent role in the NHS were given fresh hope with the relaunch of the Independent Pharmacy Federation.

The event, which took place at the House of Commons yesterday, was attended by heads of pharmacy bodies, GPs, politicians and manufacturers. Its relaunch, following its original formation in 2006, marks a strong a statement of intent given that it now boasts a political punch, with Labour MP Claire Ward at the helm as the body’s new chief executive.
“It’s a difficult time for community pharmacists. At first (the IPF) didn’t have the organisational support or funding to do what we wanted to do for community pharmacists. We wanted to get together to relaunch the IPF with that organisation,” she said. “We want to ensure there’s an exclusive and stronger voice for independent pharmacy.”
IPF chairman Fin McCaul added: “We’ve been considering how to secure clinical input at all levels (for pharmacists). We are almost a dying breed. We were once 80% of the sector. Now, we are down to 40%. What we’re passionate about is working collaboratively to improve outcomes for patients. Independents have provided innovation in the past and we continue to promote that.”

Financial backing for the IPF is crucial for the body to function effectively and, at the time of the event, Sigma Pharmaceuticals managing director, Bharat Shah, revealed that three companies had pledged funding – Sigma, Crescent Pharma and Genus Pharmaceuticals.
He was, however, concerned that much is still to be done for pharmacy to gain the recognition it deserves. “We’re not even recognised as important enough to be on GP consortia,” he said. “We lobbied to change the name of GP consortia. It gives the impression it’s a club for doctors.”

The IPF also revealed in a survey that a staggering 98% of independent pharmacists do not believe that the current structure of GP consortia provide the scope to maximise pharmacy’s skills in a reformed NHS.

The Independent Pharmacy Federation is being re-launched with a new board of directors and Claire Ward, former MP and government minister, as chief executive officer. The relaunch is being backed by Crescent Pharma, Sigma Pharmaceuticals and Genus Pharmaceuticals. Free membership is being changed to paid membership with the aim of the organisation becoming self-financing.

Chief Executive of Crescent Pharma Mohammed Al Doori says ‘We are very pleased to be in a position to support the IPF; independent pharmacy is key to the continued growth and development of the pharmaceutical industry and it is important that their political interests are properly represented. By helping to relaunch the IPF as a subscription based organisation the board will be able to carry on their important work in a sustainable manner and to help them to do more in the future.’

Support for The University of Nottingham’s African Caribbean Society (ACS)

This year, for the first time, Crescent Pharma has opted to support The University of Nottingham’s African Caribbean Society (ACS). The decision to support this admirable society was made following a compelling appeal from the ACS’s Sports Secretary Sheunesu Badza.

Every year the Nottingham based society holds numerous events showcasing the talents and skills of their own members as well as those from other universities. Through these events they look to not only support their members’ hobbies and skills but also to create a sense of unity amongst their members and to educate them on African and Caribbean history. It was these initiatives and enthusiasm that impressed everyone at Crescent Pharma and made them happy to offer their support.

On behalf of the society Shuenesu Badza says, ‘As a not-for profit student society, we look to sponsorship to ensure that all areas within the ACS are to a certain, acceptable standard. It is only through sponsorship that we can maintain standards of our society and ensure we continue to gain that status and recognition of Best ACS in the country. In particular we are extremely proud of the current structure of the ACS football team, and this upcoming year we are expecting a very promising and exciting season throughout the whole sports department of the ACS. We are also looking to go on tour with both the football and netball teams next year to Italy, where we will be involved in tournaments with other teams across the continent. This is just a small example which shows our vision and how serious we consider sport within our society.’

The money that Crescent Pharma has donated has been used to purchase full football kits along with printed names and squad numbers. Any remaining funds have been put towards the purchase of equipment required to aid the running of training sessions.

Mo has been going on and on about how he would love to sky dive…

So we took this opportunity to arrange a sky dive for him, all in the aid of charity.

This is where we would like to ask you for your help…

The sky diving event will take place in October (Don’t worry you will be the first to see the pictures of the ‘big day’)

Our aim is to raise £5,000 for ‘Sebastian’s Action Trust’ .… Any size donation would be hugely appreciated.

Sebastian’s Action Trust is a registered charity providing respite holidays and ongoing practical support to seriously-ill children and their families. The children and adolescents they support battle with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.

The Trust runs the UK’s only purpose-built respite holiday house for seriously-ill children and their families.

Having visited ‘Sebastian’s Action Trust’, we were truly inspired by the exceptional service it offers. This breath taking house offers something unique to those in need.. It costs £2500 to run a week… so our aim is to fund at least 2 weeks, hence our target of £5000, we really hope you can help!!

Please visit www.sebastiansactiontrust.org for more information.

Please take a minute or so to look at the charity website. And if you require further information regarding the charity please feel free to contact us!

In 2007, Crescent Pharma acquired our now sister company Anglian Pharma, which exclusively deals with our OTC products. Now at the end of 2013 Anglian Pharma is being renamed Crescent Pharma OTC.

Here at Crescent Pharma HQ we wanted the world to realise we are not exclusive to generics, which is why we took the executive decision to rename Anglian Pharma. We sat down and looked at what we had, deciding to completely revamp the whole company with a new name, logo and website which can be found at www.crescentpharmaotc.com.

Children in Need 2015

Crescent loves a good fundraiser and we especially love it if it’s for a good cause!  This year we grouped together to raise money for Children in Need and with a grand total of £281.30 we can safely say that the day was a success.

There were two main events of the day with lots of games to raise money.

First we held Crescent’s very own “Great British Bake Off”. There are a few budding bakers roaming the Crescent offices and this was shown on the day, with lemon drizzle cakes, brownies, and beautifully iced cupcakes. All of the cakes were delicious but there could only be one winner! Well deserved, Angela with her homemade Pudsey bear cake!

IMG_5061

Following the cakes, was the goody-jar auction. Giving feels good so this year we all gave a little of our time and got creative. We made home-made jars filled with treats. Some of the jars were filled with girly treats, others had candles and fluffy socks. We even had a few Christmas essentials in a couple of the jars. The winner for the most creative jar was our lovely Tanya with her pink themed pamper pot.

IMG_5068IMG_5069

Finally, as always we had a few smaller (or not so small) games for the day. We had a 3ft bear to guess the weight of and also a Crescent employee disguised in a Pudsey onsie!

Crescent Pharma are proud supporters of the charity, Inter Care. Crescent Pharma have helped Inter Care by donating excess medicines for them to take to areas of Africa where medicines are not readily available or easily accessible.

Inter-Care

Inter Care are a unique charity that recycles quality surplus medical waste and donates aid to African health units. Inter Care, established in 1974 has already donated over £12 million of medical aid. They are a UK based, licenced charity in Leicestershire.

The unused medicines are donated from pharmaceutical companies and medical wholesalers. Inter Care then take these aids to 130 health units in rural Africa, thus benefiting hospitals, health centres, infirmaries, prisons, dispensaries, schools, orphanages and centres for the disabled.

Alongside the urgent need for sub-Saharan Africa to receive medical aid, Inter Care realised the amount of unnecessary medical waste and sought to do something about it.

The team are a fantastic group, made up of 60 volunteers that go out of their way to help others.

Crescent Pharma has helped Inter Care by donating excess medicines for the last few years. Now you can also help, whether individually or through your workplace.

  • Donate

Crescent is proud to continue to donate to and support Inter Care in future years.

Last Friday was a big day at Crescent Pharma as we supported Sarah shaving all her hair off to raise money for Cancer Research!

On Friday 29th May, Sarah from our offices held a big fundraising day for Cancer Research.  The day had been widely anticipated as Sarah was planning to shave all of her hair off to raise money for cancer reseach. All the staff contributed to a BBQ and despite the dreadful weather, loads of fun was had by all and we very much enjoyed the array of burgers, sausages, salad etc.

We also played lots of games including “design Sarah a new hair style”, a treasure map and “guess the celebrity”. The finale to the day was Sarah having all her hair shaved off!  Originally planning to have a grade 3, she managed to bribe enough money out of everyone to go to a grade 1.

The total raised so far was £2645.09 and its still coming in.  Sarah would like to thank everyone who supported her in this event.

If you would  like to donate please visit the following link: www.justgiving.com/sarahdoesbald

Beta Charitable Trust Cataract Surgeries Report

$

BCT’s Report on Cataract Surgeries:

It is alarming that 282 million people worldwide have abnormal vision and 14% of them are completely blind. Also of concern is the fact that 90% of visually impaired people live in low-income settings.

BCT is on a mission to improve the eye sight of such needy communities and prevent blindness among them. We do so by sponsoring eye camps, to examine them, conduct tests, and treat their eye diseases thereby preventing progression to blindness as well as provide them with spectacles to improve their vision. We also provide surgeries to restore vision among cataract blind people.

The latest eye camp was held in Lamu Island on invitation by Riyadha Health Group during the annual cultural festival. Lamu also known as “The Island of festivals” is a UNESCO world heritage site that attracts tourists from all over the world. It however also faces a range of medical challenges including prevalent eye diseases.

The team ran the eye department comprising two separate clinics. An outpatient clinic was run at the Riyadha primary school during which 588 needy patients were treated for various eye diseases while a surgical clinic was run at the King Fahad Hospital.

Outpatient clinic:

Held at Riyadha primary school the following services where offered by the team free of charge:

  • Eye drops dispensed to treat various eye diseases – 521
  • Spectacles given out to improve vision – 285
  • Cataract blindness diagnosed – 60

Surgical clinic:

The team held a surgical camp at the King Fahad Hospital to provide the much needed ophthalmic surgical services. The team conducted the following surgeries free of charge:

  • Cataract surgeries to restore vision – 25
  • Chalazion surgery to prevent damage to the eye cornea – 2

On follow up, all cataract surgeries were successful with vision restored in the patients. No complications have been reported, and all the beneficiaries have expressed heartfelt gratitude. Most of them were elderly, who had lived in a state of blindness for many years, but could not access treatment as it was not available locally and they could not afford to travel for it.

Of note is Elvis Charo, a 9 year old boy who grew up with his right eye blind. This had interfered with normal learning as well as social interaction with other children not only due to poor vision but also due to stigmatisation as he was known as the boy with “one eye”.

For more information  on all the great work BCT does and do, here’s a link to their website.
