Simple Eco-Friendly Bathroom Swaps

Plastic has been in the news exponentially recently but there have been some positive steps taken to start reducing the amount of waste out there. For example, you’ve probably noticed you’re your favourite smoothie or milkshake is now coming with a paper straw instead of a plastic one. Small, positive changes like these can be implemented at home too with very little difficulty. Of course, at first it can seem daunting, especially if you haven’t been considering going packaging free before. However have no fear as we have collated lots of simple eco-friendly bathroom swaps to get you started with minimal fuss.

Toothbrush

A toothbrush is pretty much a bathroom staple for everyone, thankfully, but there are ways to make this essential tool a more eco-friendly option.

For example, if you use a manual toothbrush, you are supposed to replace them every 3 months. That means that in one year you would have thrown away 4 pieces of plastic a day. Doesn’t sound like that much? There are 65.64 million people in the UK and if everyone is throwing away just 4 pieces of plastic a year… I mean, you do the math!

So the alternative? You could try a bamboo toothbrush which are made from a sustainable source or alternatively investing in an electric toothbrush will mean less waste each year.

Shower Gel

Did you know that you could reduce the amount of plastic bottles you throw away each year by just swapping your bottled shower gel? There are a few options but the one that has gotten me the most excited is the Naked Shower Gel from Lush. This product has no plastic bottle and at first glance looks like a giant bar of soap shaped into a bottle. However, Lush have explained that the product is in fact shower gel, providing you with the same powerful fragrance you usually get as well as a lather and they are made from mostly the same ingredients as shower gels, not soaps. Sanitary Products

It is estimated that a woman will throw away 13,000 tampons and pads in a lifetime. There are many options out there, such as reusable sanitary pads or period pants. One of our favourites is of course the Menstrual Cup! (We may be a little biased!).

Menstrual Cups are a reusable form of sanitary protection and can be used for up to 2 years at a time. The cup’s ability to be reused again and again means you can be confident that you are doing your bit for the environment.

We offer a Feminesse Menstrual Cup which is a reusable, pH friendly and eco-friendly alternative to tampons and sanitary towels. It boasts a unique, foldable design meaning the cup can be stored virtually flat and fits neatly inside the included silicone travel case. With all of these boxes ticked, is this the easiest choice yet? Face Wipes

It’s kind of scary to think how many face wipes I have used. In fact, they’re really unnecessary and often I find that they don’t actually get all of my make-up off anyway.

For a win-win option try using a muslin cloth with hot water. You will be amazed by how much dirt you can get off your face as well as reducing your waste on a daily basis. Oh yes!

Razors

Razors, just like the toothbrush, are pieces of plastic that get thrown away on a regular basis. Unfortunately most of them are not recyclable and we use a lot more of them than toothbrushes, so they could be one of the most wasteful bathroom products.

A simple eco-friendly bathroom swap is a safety razor. As they are made from stainless steel they can be recycled.

Alternatively you could also opt for an electric razor or an epilator.

Toilet paper

Finally, the most commonly used product in the bathroom on a daily basis? Toilet paper! There are eco-friendly toilet papers out there such as 100% recycled paper.
